You’ve never been anywhere quite like Laity Lodge . . .
Even the best photos don’t do it justice. In a pristine canyon, carved in the middle of the rolling scrub brush of Central Texas, you will encounter a blending of faith and nature. There is something special happening here in an atmosphere of unfettered loving acceptance—as the thousands of “Laity Lodge veterans” will happily attest .
First, the setting. Bubbling, cold, and clear from deep springs, the Frio River has carved a glorious notch through the heart of the Texas Hill Country. Among the cypress and oak trees, an extravagant array of plants, birds, fish, and land animals move freely along the sparkling water of the Frio. Laity Lodge blends into this primeval setting, snuggled in the shadows of towering cliffs and bluff walls. Driving down into the Canyon bottom, and then literally driving upstream through the Frio River, even long-time visitors invariably gasp at this rare and glorious place.

Second, the retreats. Lured in by both the lavish beauty of the Canyon and the graciousness of Howard and Barbara Dan Butt, some of the world’s finest theologians, biblical scholars, artists, authors, and experts in the fields of human relations return year after year to Laity Lodge. In this uncommonly rich setting, creativity, healing, and inspiration flourish. Spiritual insights are lightning quick. Personal reflection is deep and abiding. While each retreat is unique, all provide a small universe of choices for guests. Do you crave mind-expanding study of scripture that can inform and empower all aspects of your life? Do you need to experience some healing for pain and brokenness? Solitude and silence? Creative outlets? Do you need a time to simply be loved and served by a caring staff and other guests? Deep unwinding and rest? All sorts of recreation? Hilarity and just some plain ole’ fun? They are all here—every day.
Third, the activities. The Canyon provides an extraordinary range of activities, from vigorous hiking and biking up rugged hills for heart-thrilling vistas above the Frio River to lazy hours of dozing in a hammock. The sheer diversity of activities surprises guests. What shall I do today? Fish, swim, wade, kayak, canoe, play tennis, snorkel, explore the bookstore, indulge in an art workshop, play in the art studios, spend time in the art gallery, or grab a cup of java in the evening from the bottomless pot and stare at the bright stars and the abundant beauty of God’s creation? What shall I do today?
Once you have been to Laity Lodge, you will count the days until you can return.
